Protecting Your Personal Information at Work - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Protecting Your Personal Information at Work - Introvert Whisperer Protecting Your Personal Information at Work Data privacy is a concern for many workplaces. This relates to the way that they collect, store, and process personal information. The concern goes farther than business functions, however, as the privacy of their employees information is something to seriously consider when discussing cybersecurity as a whole. So, how does this impact you as an employee and how can you protect yourself against the impacts of a data breach or personal invasion? As a busy employee, you likely have several thoughts running through your head during the 8+ hours on the job. Oftentimes, these thoughts extend past office tasks and require making appointments, running errands, or checking on a personal matter. When these tasks are completed on devices over the office network, your employer is able to see your search history. This can leave many employees feeling like they have no ability for privacy. Ultimately this could lead to a decrease in employee morale and productivity. Additionally, if your company should fall victim to a data breach, this could also put you at risk of more serious risks such as identity theft. Look into your company policy Familiarizing yourself with the policies that your company has set in place regarding data privacy and collection can help you better understand how they will be monitoring and utilizing your data. This information is likely to be found in the company handbook or by asking human resources and/or the IT department. Separate work and personal life The best way to keep the information you donât wish to disclose private is to separate work and personal business completely. This means avoiding using your work computer for personal matters. Even bring your own device, such as a mobile phone to the companyâs network leaves it susceptible to an investigation. For example, checking job board sites on your mobile phone while on the network can signal your company that youâre actively looking for a new job. Save this and other personal tasks for your own time such as lunch breaks, or after hours. Additionally, make sure that you are using different passwords for each device and that these passwords are unique and hard to guess. Use a VPN If you wish to have your internet activity almost completely private, you may want to consider using a virtual private network. This software is easy to install and ensures that your session is private by encrypting your data. It works by routing your internet actions to a server and changing your IP address to hide it from any potential eavesdroppers or cybercriminals. This can also be a helpful tool for anyone who travels for their job as many airports, hotels, and cafes have unsecured wireless networks making them more susceptible. Donât overshare personal information A general rule of thumb but something that is often forgotten, is avoiding the practice of oversharing information about yourself at work. Though you may build trusting relationships and friendships with coworkers one slip up can land you in dangerous water. Always keep your passwords to yourself and put your computer to sleep when you get up from it. The only person that you should ever need to provide your social security number, address, or phone number to is someone in HR and even then, the case is rare. If you must provide them with this information, make sure that you do so in person or in writing and definitely not via email or chat. Use common sense Take responsibility for your actions online and use common sense. Whether its a questionable picture youâre sharing, an angry tweet you sent in the heat of the moment about a coworker, or an email with non-work-related content always think twice. Under the law, your company has a legal right to monitor and hold you accountable for this information. More employees are being let go from their jobs each year due to compromising social media posts. Itâs always better to take time to think a situation through then end up regretting it when it comes back to haunt you. Accommodations for College Students with ADHD
Accommodations for College Students with ADHD For teens with ADHD, college acceptance represents a major milestone, and one that they worked very hard to achieve. Once the admissions offer has been accepted and the celebration has died down, its time to start thinking about how your teens needs will be met once college life begins. Academic accommodations are one tool that may help students with ADHD manage some of the impairments that make college more difficult. These accommodations wont guarantee success during college, but for some students with ADHD, they can be a very helpful piece of a more comprehensive plan. When parents and teens start looking into academic accommodations, they typically have a lot of questions and very few answers. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers to get you started on this journey. What documentation is needed to qualify for academic accommodations in college? Each college has its own process for determining which students qualify for accommodations (and the specific accommodations they are eligible to receive). So, its important to reach out to the college as soon as possible to find out about their specific requirements. In general, colleges require a recent psychoeducation or neuropsychological testing report that documents the ADHD diagnosis and/or any specific learning differences and impairments that would justify the requested accommodations. Typically, a letter from a pediatrician, psychiatrist, or psychologist will not suffice in the absence of detailed test results. I tried to get my teen an IEP when he was in middle school or high school, and the school said he didnt qualify. Does this mean he wont be able to get accommodations in college? College students can qualify for academic accommodations even if they were denied an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) earlier in their education. This is due in part to the fact that college students with ADHD are offered protections through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) rather than the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that covers IEPs. Who should we talk to at the college about the accommodation process? There are many offices and professionals who assist students with ADHD on college campuses, and knowing who to contact first can be a challenge. Your best starting point is typically the Office of Disability Support Services, or the individual listed as the 504 or American Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator at the institution. When should we start talking with the college about academic accommodations? The process of obtaining accommodations can be lengthy, and I always recommend that parents and students begin talking with the college as soon as they accept the admissions offer. What types of accommodations are available? Perhaps not surprisingly, the accommodations and services offered on college campuses can vary widely. Some campuses offer extensive services, and others only offer more basic accommodations. However, most colleges will at least offer the following: Testing accommodations (e.g. extended time, private testing room) Permission to record lectures and/or have a note-taker in class to capture content the student with ADHD may have missed Access to audio books Reduced course-load Course substitutions for typically required courses Should I expect my teen to complete the academic accommodation qualification process on their own? I want them to become more independent, but Im not sure theyll follow through without my help. The process of qualifying for college accommodations can be daunting, even for adults with years of experience. While its important to push your teen toward independence, now is not the time to have them go it alone. That said, your teen should be involved in the process every step of the way, and even take ownership of some of the smaller steps of the process if thats practical and feasible. ABOUT DR. Reasons To Consider Refinancing Your Student Loans
Reasons To Consider Refinancing Your Student Loans Image via blog.denverpost.com The first thing to consider when refinancing your student loan is how much interest am I paying? If your interest rates are higher than 6.5 percent, then it would be smart to look into it. You have the potential to cut those rates in half. According to the washingtonpost.com, who interviewed a couple in debt for $300,000, âThe Salvias refinanced their student loans this year through Citizens Bank, slashing their interest rates from about 6.75 percent to 2.35 percent, putting their student loan rate lower than their mortgage rate of 3.25 percent. Their monthly payments dropped by $700. The savings, the couple says, will go toward day care. However, new student loans are not just handed out another reason you have to consider. Secondly, a little thing called credit comes into play. Lenders are more likely to offer you a loan if they see you have a good credit score, a number between 690 and 850. As college students, it is expected that you have a not-so-great credit score. In this situation, a co-signer comes into play. This co-signer can be a parent or another adult who will take responsibility for the loan. According to usatoday.com, âSome lenders, including SoFi and Earnest, have been backing away from credit scores as a basis for evaluating potential customers. Your monthly cash flow, education and employment history are more telling, they say.â Having a stable income compared to your debt is also attractive to lenders. Naturally, if your income is significantly lower than your current debit, it is highly unlikely you will be able to refinance your loan. According to usatoday.com, âLower your debt by throwing extra funds at your credit card balance, student loans and car loans. Credit card debt in particular can be a red flag for lenders, Passione says. But once itâs gone, youâll likely have a better chance at a favorable interest rate when you refinance.â Passione, as mentioned above, is CEO and founder of LendKey, which is a refinancing lender. Image via startribune.com In addition to interest rate, credit score, and income, consider your ability to make monthly payments. Not only can your interest rate decrease, but so can the monthly repayment amount. Time period options vary from 5, 10, to 15 years, and so on. For example, changing a 10-year loan to a 20-year loan will drop your payments considerably. Studentloanhero.com suggests: âalthough your monthly payments will drop, be careful as you might accrue more interest and end up paying more over the long haul.â Furthermore, consider looking for a more flexible repayment plan. Chances are there is one out there that suits your situation better. Compared to a federal loan, private banks offer limited programs. A federal loan, according to studentloanhero.com, offers âgreat benefits such as Pay As You Earn, Income Based Repayment, and Income Contingent Repaymentâ Refinancing your student loan might also let you release your previous co-signer. Why is this something to think about though? Chances are that co-signer is one of your parents, and the money-stress between you two has been taking a toll on the family dynamic. On the plus side, without your loan bringing down their credit score, your parents can then invest in a big purchase like a new car or a beach house. And that can benefit you too. Switching to a new bank can also be a reason why you are considering a new student loan. Some banks just do not offer the service some people would like, and there is no problem for changing banks because of this. According to studentloanhero.com, âRefinancing your student loans gives you the opportunity to switch to a new bank that has a great customer service record and better track record working with student loan borrowers. So there you have it. Refinancing a student loan can really ease up the stress in your life after college. Whether the reason is interest rates or monthly payments, there are many reasons why you should consider refinancing your student loan.
Can We Please Stick With True Journalism
Can We Please Stick With True Journalism Photo credit- Google Images Given all of the recent misreporting and media frenzy, it might be time to make sure those of dedicated to writing remember what true journalism looks like. Breaking a story in todayâs fast-paced digital world is important, but accuracy still weighs in a little heavier. Break the story, but donât report information until it is proven accurate through fact-checking. A journalist can break a story with minimal details and update the public after credible sources can confirm additional information. In times of uncertainty and frenzy, misinformation only adds to the chaos. Itâs important to remember these aspects of true journalism for the sake of public sanity (and your job): Get accurate info- If you do nothing else, at least get the facts rather than some clip of information that might sound true. Reach out to multiple solid sources. Relying on only a few questionable sources in an effort to break a story diminishes a journalistâs credibility. Be patient- a true journalist understands the importance of waiting a little longer to let the story unfold. The big picture is oftentimes more revealing than the short story at the forefront. Remain objective- emotional situations can lead to improper reporting. Objectivity is a journalistâs greatest asset when the facts need to be laid out for the public. Report the happenings, not the emotion behind them. Stay open-minded- Remember keep your eyes and ears open. Many times, the best story is an accident. Focus on the story at hand, but be willing to travel a little off course if necessary. Journalists have a code of ethics to follow and a standard to strive for. Reporting to the public is one of the most difficult jobs a person can undertake. Just one reporting mishap can make an entire organization look bad. Breaking headline news is only beneficial when the facts are checked, well written, and relevant.
